Access Authentication Options

What access authentication options do you offer for institutions?
You can select from two validation options for your institution: IP validation and/or referring domain access. Many libraries choose to use both of these options simultaneously, although only one is required for institution-wide validation. Each option is summarized below, including what is necessary from the institution and the key considerations for each option.

If you need to update or add an access method, please contact Trang Duong at email: institutions@psych.org or phone: (800) 368-5777 x8538 or (703) 907-8538.

IP Validation. IP validation is straightforward. Access is tied to the physical network location of the user. Institutions provide the IP ranges of their controlled network, and those IP ranges are associated with their PsychiatryOnline.com account. When users in those IP ranges come to any page on the site, they are automatically validated and logged in as a user from that institution. It is completely seamless to the user—they can access content immediately without log in.

Some institutions use proxy servers, which actually make the process even easier. All of their network activity is routed through one or more IP addresses. When those IP addresses are attached to the account, the entire institution gains access.

Benefits:

  • Seamless access for users.
  • Adds a layer of control for institutions—guarantees that only your institution’s users will be using your paid access.
  • Established method of access—most institutions use this type of access with other websites so they are familiar with the process.

Negatives:

  • More complicated setup. Institutional administrators must be able to retrieve and share their IP ranges.
  • Requires maintenance. IP ranges can change at an institution. It is the responsibility of the administrator to supply any IP range updates during the subscription period.
  • Does not allow for most “at home” or remote use unless the user is getting their Internet access through the institution.

Referring Domain Access. Referring domain access solves the final “negative” listed under IP validation—it allows for at home or remote access for valid institutional users. For that reason, it is often combined with IP access to create comprehensive access for an institution’s on-site and remote users. Referring domain access requires the institution to put a link behind their own security. Many library systems have a secure area of their website that requires log in so that at-home users can access the library’s holdings remotely.

To implement referring domain access, the institution puts a link to PsychiatryOnline.com (any page) behind their own security layer. The PsychiatryOnline.com system attaches the domain to that institution. When a user clicks the link on the institution’s site, he or she is sent to PsychiatryOnline.com. PsychiatryOnline checks the REFERRER element in the user’s HTTP header that normally accompanies every Internet link request. If that REFERRER matches a referring domain, the user is automatically logged in and given access in that institution’s account.

It is very important that the institution does not put a link to PsychiatryOnline.com on any nonsecure portion of its website—doing so could allow access to nonauthorized users, which would be a violation of the institution’s licensing agreement.

Benefits:

  • Provides access for remote users who are not within the institution’s IP range. They only need to know their institution login, not a separate one for PsychiatryOnline.com.
  • Seamless access.

Negatives:

  • More complicated setup. Requires institutions to only put the link in a restricted area or use a different domain than their main domain.
  • Occasionally will fail for individual users because of personal firewall or browser settings that restrict PsychiatryOnline.com from seeing the REFERRER element in the HTTP header.

IMPORTANT CAVEAT: Usage of the journals may be underreported for users accessing the subscription using the referring domain method. Usage of individual journal articles can be tracked only by IP address, so usage by users with nonregistered IPs will not be shown in usage reports.

Username and Password Access. For access during a free trial, and very rarely as part of a paid subscription, we may allow global username/password validation. With this option the institution chooses a username and password that can be used to log in from any location (not site-restricted).

Benefits:

  • Extremely easy setup.
  • Appropriate for time-limited trials. Allows key stakeholders to evaluate the application from any location without the need to do full IP range/referring domain setup.

Negatives:

  • Extremely nonsecure. The username/password combination can easily be distributed outside the institution or posted on the Internet. This could lead to a serious breach of the license by the institution. As a result, we only allow this access method for time-limited free trials and for emergencies.

Statistics & Reporting

Where can I see usage statistics for my institution’s subscription?
You can view usage statistics for your institution at your convenience at www.psychiatryonline.com/statistics. Simply log in with your administrator username and password. If you do not know your login information, please email institutions@psych.org or call (800) 368-5777 x8538 or (703) 907-8538.

You’ll need to visit two locations to collect complete usage statistics. Our journals are hosted by HighWire Press, so you should use the HighWire interface (which we hope is familiar to you from other journal subscriptions) to access full journal statistics. Books stats are available from www.psychiatryonline.com/statistics; there is a link from that location to your institution’s journals stats on the HighWire site.

Book usage reports are broken down by month, with the current month displayed by default. Stats recalculate nightly. You can select to review stats for previous months, or for year-to-date.

“Referring domain” institutional access users: Usage of the journals may be underreported for users accessing the subscription using the referring domain method. Usage of individual journal articles can be tracked only by IP address, so usage by users with nonregistered IPs will not be shown in usage reports.

Do PsychiatryOnline.com usage statistics conform to COUNTER standards?
Usage statistics for the PsychiatryOnline journals closely follow COUNTER standards. COUNTER standards are well developed for journals, but for books/reference works the standard is still in the draft stage. However, we have already implemented the major guidelines for PsychiatryOnline books, and we will continue to monitor and implement the COUNTER standards as they evolve.

Terms of Use/License

Does PsychiatryOnline.com have a licensing agreement?
We have institutional terms of use that you can view here. Individual users are bound by the Terms of Use available as a link in the footer of most pages of PsychiatryOnline.com.

What is the PsychiatryOnline.com policy on interlibrary loan?
Institutional subscribers may fulfill requests from other institutions, a practice commonly called interlibrary loan (ILL). To be in compliance with the Terms of Use, ILL requests must be filled in compliance with Section 108 of the United States Copyright Law (17 USC 108, “Limitations on exclusive rights: Reproduction by libraries and archives”) and clause 3 of the Guidelines for the Proviso of Subsection 108(g)(2) prepared by the National Commission on New Technological Uses of Copyrighted Works.

What is the PsychiatryOnline.com policy on perpetual access?
PsychiatryOnline.com participates in the LOCKSS system for archiving digitized journal back issues and previous editions of books. Under this program, previous editions of books would be placed in LOCKSS for perpetual access once a new edition is placed online. Previous editions of books would only become available via LOCKSS after a new edition is released online. (Subscription rates for current editions of books are calculated based on 12 months of access, not life of the edition.)

To benefit from this support, institutional subscribers must install a LOCKSS cache at their institution. (See http://lockss.stanford.edu for further information.) Institutional subscribers may perpetually use the LOCKSS system to archive and restore PsychiatryOnline.com content, so long as the institutional subscriber's use is otherwise consistent with the Terms of Use. APPI further acknowledges and agrees that, in using the LOCKSS system, PsychiatryOnline content may be made available to other LOCKSS system participants who indicate a right to the subscribed PsychiatryOnline content.

Are federated search or metasearch options available for PsychiatryOnline.com?
Not yet. But we are working to make this capability available. If you have chosen a specific vendor or product (if any) for your metasearch solution, we’d love to know the details.

We’d like to make the PsychiatryOnline.com Journals available via PubMed LinkOut. Which provider do we select?
Electronic citation data and links to full text are submitted to PubMed LinkOut by HighWire Press on behalf of the PsychiatryOnline Journals. Please select the links provided by HighWire Press.

Does PsychiatryOnline.com support “deep linking” through stable and persistent URLs?
Yes, PsychiatryOnline.com books and journals support deep linking. Articles and book sections are assigned absolute IDs that stick with that piece of content as long as it remains on the website. Thus, URLs constructed with our IDs will always point to the same content, as long as that content is still on the site.

Is PsychiatryOnline OpenURL compliant?
Yes, PsychiatryOnline Journals are hosted by HighWire Press, which is completely compliant as a target. So OpenURL resolvers can link to the content hosted by HighWire.

Can I link directly to the journals and books on PsychiatryOnline.com?
Yes; direct links are provided below. But please keep in mind that linking directly to the home pages of the journals will bypass the PsychiatryOnline.com interface and deny your users some of the rich interlinkages available as part of your subscription.

Our first defense against unplanned downtime, service interruptions, and disasters is our strong hosting partner. PsychiatryOnline.com is hosted by a commercial Internet data center which is a Cisco Premier Certified Partner and a Microsoft Gold Partner. The data center offers the following infrastructure:

  • Multiple DS3 connections
  • Fully redundant Cisco-powered network
  • Full BGP routing with peers

  • Dedicated and backup industrial cooling systems
  • External and internal performance and environmental monitoring
  • 24x7 security, ADT monitoring

We also maintain a disaster recovery system that ensures full service of the website within 3–4 hours of any service interruption. We maintain a backup copy of the content and application in an off-site, secure location. Planned downtime for maintenance is kept to a bare minimum and is done during off-peak hours.
